“THE MIND IS NOT A VESSEL TO BE FILLED, BUT A FIRE TO BE KINDLED.”

THE COLLEGIUM

COLLEGIUM (LATIN), n: A GROUP UNITED BY COMMON PURPOSE

Education stands at a crossroads. At this juncture, young people must make a choice.

The “college route” commonly leads to crippling debt, inflated degrees, and ideological indoctrination. The “alternative education path” is beset by the duplicity of hustlers, the vacuity of credentialism, and the passivity of idle information consumption.

Rightly understood, education is the fruit of the search after truth, beauty, and goodness. Our age’s “education-industrial” apparatus eviscerates this ideal, fulfilling C. S. Lewis’s prophecy: “We make men without chests and expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst. We castrate and bid the geldings be fruitful.”

A third way is needed, a still more excellent way—one that is grounded in truth, imbued with sanity, and committed to localism, the love of people for the place where they live.

LOCAL SETTING. NATIONAL SCALE.

Education is not the sum of steps taken towards credentials and career lanes. Nor does it consist of the rote consumption of disconnected facts. Education, befitting a free citizen, should have for its end the personal, intellectual, and vocational enrichment of those who partake in it.

The Collegium is building on this foundation to deliver a wide range of learning opportunities which prioritize agency over passivity, and engagement with ideas over consumption of information. From local courses hosted in pubs and breweries to virtual sessions that set a new standard for digital education, the Collegium is reviving a new way to learn—one rooted in the most effective methods of Western education.

The Collegium mission is to invigorate well-ordered minds, joined in pursuit of personal, intellectual, and vocational cultivation.

Correspondingly, our vision for the Collegium is that it become a vital society of learning, grounded in reality and firm in veracity.

“EDUCATION CANNOT ACHIEVE MUCH UNLESS IT HAS A CULTURE BEHIND IT.”
