Mankind deserves a better public square than social media.
Our world, which has never been more connected, has also never been more starved for community. A truism, yes—but only, and tragically, because it is true. Many of our social environments, whether personal or digital, have become shallow and sterile places, encouraging passivity and freneticism instead of agency and the tranquility of order.
Yet it need not be this way. The hum of conversation can relieve the hubbub of idle chatter; the warmth of community can overcome the chill of isolation. This is the more excellent way.
CURATED SOCIAL EXPERIENCES
The aim of the Salon, historically, has been to host and facilitate conversations on the important ideas of the day. The Arcata Salon, drawing life from these historic roots, endeavors to do the same, inspired by the belief that leisure and personal encounter are essential conditions for human flourishing.
Salon events are anchored in conversations on timely and timeless topics, spanning culture, governance, economics, and technology, led by speakers who are enlightening, edifying, and entertaining.
Beginning with our Fall 2026 Summit in Bozeman, Montana, the Salon is building a platform to establish and sustain a culture befitting “mankind, fully alive,” in cities across the nation.
The Salon mission is to host lively gatherings for people of goodwill, convened around great food and substantive conversation.
Likewise, our vision for the Salon is that it become a robust network of cultural events, fostering shared inquiry and spirited fellowship.
