ATELIER (FRENCH), n: A WORKSHOP OR STUDIO
Economics is, in its broadest sense, the science of “housekeeping” (from its Greek root, oikonomia). It is the management of everyday affairs, conducted by everyday people, and inevitably at the local level.
Local business is the backbone of a healthy economy, the lifeblood of a flourishing community. But the challenges, complexities, and costs of starting and operating a business at the local level are staggering.
In the main, the solution of these varied predicaments require expertise that cannot be learned overnight. Moreover, finding the right person with that experience is notoriously difficult, as the professional talent marketplace is often fragmented, transactional, and unreliable, leaving many business owners with no clear answers.

The Atelier exists to provide those solutions by orchestrating effective collaborations between business owners with trusted practitioners from within the Arcata ecosystem. As the applied layer of Arcata, the Atelier is where conversation and formation are channeled into meaningful labor that builds local business and economy.
Through workshop events, direct engagements with practitioners, or informal talent pathways, the Atelier connects opportunity and necessity with strategic and practical skill. Thereby, Arcata becomes a true guild of intellectual and economical craftsmanship, facilitating meaningful work that promotes the good, true, and beautiful in the context of local communities.
